SURKHET, May 18: At least 63 road accidents were recorded in Nepal’s Surkhet district during the Nepali month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May), leaving one person dead and 118 others injured, according to the District Traffic Police Office in Surkhet.
Traffic police officials said driver negligence was responsible for the overwhelming majority of crashes. Data released by the office showed that nearly 93 percent of the accidents were linked to careless driving, overspeeding, dangerous overtaking and violations of traffic rules.
When will it end?
During the month-long enforcement campaign, traffic police carried out vehicle inspections at 950 locations across the district. Authorities took action against 1,480 vehicles found violating traffic regulations, collecting Rs 1.292 million in revenue from penalties.
Police also cracked down on illegally modified vehicles, taking action against 18 such vehicles and collecting an additional Rs 85,000 in fines.
According to Surkhet District Traffic Police Chief Rohit Kumar Shahi, authorities have also prioritized public awareness programs to reduce accidents. He said 440 traffic awareness campaigns were conducted within a month targeting drivers, assistants and passengers.
Traffic police have urged motorists to strictly follow traffic rules, drive cautiously and pay greater attention to road safety.
