Gurung stepped down earlier on Wednesday after coming under scrutiny for his alleged business links with controversial entrepreneur Dipak Bhatt. He resigned, stating that he wanted an impartial investigation into the allegations.
His resignation comes just 26 days after the formation of the current government. Questions had also been raised over his asset disclosures, which were described as unusual by critics. Additional concerns emerged regarding his investments, including in micro-insurance ventures.
Reports also indicated that funds received by a social organization he operated, Hami Nepal, were allegedly transacted through a personal account, further intensifying pressure on him to resign.
Facing mounting criticism, Gurung submitted his resignation to the prime minister earlier in the day.
