KATHMANDU, April 24 : Youth leader Samik Badal has said that the suffering of genuine squatters is not limited to the absence of land but also includes a deeper crisis of identity.
In a statement shared on social media, Badal said the state should not resort to symbolic actions or “stunts” but instead clearly distinguish between those who are truly landless and those who misuse the identity of squatters for personal benefit.
A roadmap to ending landlessness
“The real pain of squatters is not just lack of land, but lack of identity,” he said, adding that people who have no land of their own are forced to live under the open sky.
He also pointed out that in some cases, individuals who already own land occupy public property by falsely claiming to be squatters, which he said weakens the struggle and voice of genuine victims.
Badal stressed that the state must separate “need” from “greed” and ensure justice for those in real need while taking action against the misuse of public resources. He said such an approach is essential to protect both good governance and basic human values.
