TIA resumes flights after 90-minute closure

KATHMANDU, May 11: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) resumed operations after being shut for around one and a half hours on Sunday morning following a fire in the wheel of a Turkish Airlines aircraft during landing.



The incident occurred when Turkish Airlines flight TK726, arriving from Istanbul, Turkey, experienced a wheel fire while touching down at TIA early in the morning. Following the incident, airport operations were suspended from 6:45 AM as a safety precaution.

According to the Acting General Manager of TIA, Tek Nath Sitaula, flight operations resumed after approximately one and a half hours of disruption. Normal activity gradually returned, with Air India landing at 8:30 AM and FlyDubai at 8:35 AM. Several outbound flights also took off after services were restored.


Police Superintendent Rajkumar Silwal at the TIA Security Office said the fire was brought under control with the help of fire engines. The aircraft was halted on the runway, and all passengers were safely evacuated through emergency exits.


He said there were 273 passengers and 11 crew members on board at the time of the incident.
