Turkish Airlines aircraft catches fire upon landing at TIA

Passengers were evacuated safely through emergency exits, and no casualties have been reported so far.

KATHMANDU, May 11: A Turkish Airlines aircraft (flight no. TK726) flying from Istanbul, Turkey, to Kathmandu caught fire while landing at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Sunday morning.



According to TIA Security Office Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Silwal, a tyre of the aircraft caught fire during landing. “This morning, a tyre of the aircraft caught fire while landing. The fire was extinguished with the help of fire engines. The situation is now under control,” he said. “The runway has been closed for some time for inspection.”

Silwal said there were 273 passengers and 11 crew members on board. All passengers were safely evacuated.

A technical inspection is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess any impact on the aircraft.
