KATHMANDU, Nov 26: CPN-UML Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali has criticized Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari’s recent remarks, calling them irresponsible.
Taking to Facebook on Wednesday, Gyawali wrote that the commissioner’s statement was “ridiculous” for comparing the special provisions made to conclude the armed conflict with present-day incidents of criminal looting.

“It is unacceptable to claim that elections cannot be held simply because a few weapons are out in the open, in a country that once conducted elections even when thousands of combatants and arms were outside the system,” Gyawali wrote.
He further said the commissioner should be aware that Maoist weapons were secured inside containers with two separate keys, and that combatants were kept in 28 designated camps under UNMIN supervision.
Gyawali added that although there were instances of misuse of both arms and combatants during the first Constituent Assembly election, comparing those incidents to the current special arrangements is unfair and politically motivated.
