SC senior-most Justice Malla goes on 20-day leave amid CJ appointment row

Justice Malla has been expressing dissatisfaction over the recommendation of Manoj Kumar Sharma as CJ, arguing that the established precedent of appointing the senior-most justice to the top post has been breached.

KATHMANDU, May 20: Senior-most Supreme Court (SC) Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla has gone on a 20-day leave. 



The SC said she herself proceeded on leave after obtaining approval for 20 days on Tuesday.

Justice Malla has been expressing dissatisfaction over the recommendation of Manoj Kumar Sharma as CJ, arguing that the established precedent of appointing the senior-most justice to the top post has been breached.


In the SC’s seniority ranking, she stands first, followed by Justice Kumar Regmi and Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal, while Sharma was fourth in line when he was recommended by the Constitutional Council.


Meanwhile, newly appointed CJ Sharma was received and welcomed by Justice Kumar Regmi on Tuesday.
