City safari driver shot dead near Nepal–India border in Sunsari

Police said the circumstances of the shooting remain unclear and that an investigation is underway to determine who fired the shot and why.

KATHMANDU, January 1: A city safari driver was shot dead in Sunsari district in the early hours of Thursday, triggering tension and raising questions over the circumstances surrounding the killing, police said.



The deceased has been identified as Bijay Shah, aged around 44, a local city safari driver from Koshi Rural Municipality–1, Lauki. The incident occurred at around 1 AM, roughly 500 meters north of the Nepal–India border.

Police said Shah was transporting sugar, detergent and tobacco products in his city safari when he was shot at.


Local residents have alleged that personnel from the Armed Police Force (APF) opened fire. Adding to the suspicion, a police team recovered two large-caliber cartridges from the scene.


Police said the circumstances of the shooting remain unclear and that an investigation is underway to determine who fired the shot and why.


“An investigation is in progress. Locals have claimed that the Armed Police Force fired the shot, and the recovery of large-caliber cartridges has also raised suspicion,” police said.
