KATHMANDU, May 28: The Nepali Congress (NC) has made its official position public on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report related to the Gen Z protests held on September 8 and 9.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the party urged the government to carry out an impartial investigation and take legal action against those found guilty.

The party also described the report of the inquiry commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki as “incomplete, unclear, and ambiguous,” adding that the NHRC report has further reinforced concerns over its credibility.

According to the NC statement, questions raised by the NHRC report regarding the chairperson of the inquiry commission have further strengthened doubts about the impartiality of the probe. It also alleged that the timing of the report’s release ahead of elections raises suspicions of intent.

The party stated that the initial phase of the protest was driven by demands for freedom of expression, peaceful demonstration, and good governance. However, it added that the movement later saw organized incidents of violence, arson, vandalism, looting, and killings, which required further investigation and legal action against those involved.

The statement further noted that the NHRC has characterized excessive use of force by security agencies and state failure as human rights violations, calling for action within constitutional and legal frameworks.

NC emphasized that as a constitutional body, NHRC’s recommendations must be implemented by state institutions.
