KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Nepali Congress Vice‑President Bishwrakash Sharma has said that the party is fully prepared for a public debate not only with its prime ministerial candidate Gagan Thapa but as an institution ready to engage in open discussion.
Speaking on Wednesday among voters of Sindhuli, Sharma reiterated that NC has always been willing to take part in direct debates and is open to all kinds of public discussions. He said the party’s policy is to encourage candidates with enthusiasm and clear vision to step forward.
I am ready for a ‘live debate’ with Deuba: Oli
Sharma also said NC has set clear criteria for selecting its prime ministerial candidate, stressing that aspirants for both national and local positions should have strong backgrounds, solid political contributions, ethical standards, and a clear vision for the country.
His remarks come amid rising calls for public debates among potential prime ministerial contenders ahead of the March 5 elections. Former Prime Minister and CPN‑UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has publicly stated his readiness to debate policies and plans with rivals, urging organisers to include all leaders for a comprehensive discussion.
However, senior Rastriya Swatantra Party Senior Leader Balendra Shah, (Balen), has declined to share the debate stage with Oli.
The debate proposal has attracted public attention as political parties seek to present their visions directly to voters amid a competitive election season.
