KATHMANDU, Dec 21: More people in Chitwan are opting for non-resident Nepali (NRN) citizenship than formally renouncing their Nepali citizenship, according to district officials.
Since July, 49 individuals have obtained NRN citizenship, while 40 people have renounced their Nepali citizenship. Among those who gave up their citizenship were 27 men and 13 women, said Assistant Chief District Officer Chiranjivi Sharma.
When will these Nepali citizens get citizenship certificates?
Sharma noted that most applicants renounce their Nepali citizenship after arriving in Nepal as part of the process to secure NRN status. Over the same period, 29 men and 20 women in the district were granted non-resident citizenship.
To obtain NRN citizenship, applicants must submit an application form along with photocopies of their passport, foreign citizenship certificate, and proof of renunciation of Nepali citizenship. The documents must also be verified by a relative or acquaintance, Sharma said.
He added that many Nepalis living abroad seek NRN citizenship primarily to ease investment and economic engagement in Nepal.
Meanwhile, the district administration revoked the citizenship of two individuals for holding dual citizenship or for involvement in anti-state activities. Since July, the office has issued citizenship certificates by descent to 3,759 people and granted citizenship through marriage to 11 others.
