KATHMANDU, March 15: The Supreme Court (SC)  on Sunday again deferred the hearing on a writ petition filed by Sher Bahadur Deuba against Gagan Thapa, president of the Nepali Congress (NC).

The case had been scheduled for hearing before a joint bench of Justices Binod Sharma and Meghraj Pokharel. However, it could not be heard due to a heavy caseload, court sources said.

The petition was listed as the last case on the bench’s docket and was postponed due to time constraints.

Deuba filed the writ petition challenging a decision by the Election Commission of Nepal, which recognized Thapa as the party chair after he was elected through a special general convention.

Earlier, the SC had issued a show-cause order and granted priority status to the case but did not issue an interim order. Since then, Thapa has continued to carry out party activities and election-related work.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Committee was held today at the party’s central office in Sanepa under Thapa’s chairmanship to discuss the selection of proportional representation lawmakers.

The SC is expected to schedule a new date for the hearing.
