KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Nepali Congress (Special Convention faction) President Gagan Thapa has expressed confidence that the Election Commission (EC) will recognise his leadership before the start of candidate nominations on January 20 for the upcoming general election.
Thapa visited the EC on Thursday to update party records, formally requesting that Sher Bahadur Deuba’s signature be replaced with his own. Thapa, along with Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma, submitted documents stating that the party had convened a Special Convention, which dissolved the Deuba-led committee and elected a new leadership.

Speaking to reporters after meeting Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and other officials, Thapa said candidate nominations must be filed by January 20. “We are confident the EC will complete the updates by Saturday (January 17) at the latest,” he said.
Thapa stressed that the Special Convention was conducted in line with party statutes, which automatically dissolved the previous committee. He added that all required documents have been submitted publicly. “The decisions of the convention are supreme for the party, so there should be no doubts about official recognition,” he said.
The deadline for direct candidate nominations for the March 5 House of Representatives election is January 21. Under the Political Parties Act, the EC is required to verify changes in party office-bearers or resolve disputes over legitimacy.
With the deadline approaching, the Special Convention faction has urged the EC to act swiftly. Thapa’s meeting with election officials aimed to clear uncertainties and ensure compliance with the election timeline. Earlier on Thursday, his first Central Committee meeting in Kupondole decided to formally update signatures and office-bearer details with the EC.
