KATHMANDU, March 16: To expand digital health insurance services, the Health Insurance Board Nepal has begun collaboration with the Department of National ID and Registration to link health insurance with citizens’ National ID (NID) numbers.
The partnership aims to simplify registration and renewal processes through online platforms, with new registrations expected to start by Chaitra 25 (April 8). Linking to the NID system is expected to reduce duplicate records, prevent misuse of health insurance cards, and improve data verification.

The agreement was signed by Director General Namraj Ghimire and Executive Director Dr. Krishna Prasad Paudel. According to Health Insurance Board Spokesperson Vikesh Mall, the digital system will allow citizens to register or renew their health insurance online and will eventually include biometric authentication for services.
Currently, about one million citizens are enrolled in the health insurance program, but manual systems have caused duplicate records and inconsistencies. The new NID-based system is expected to streamline services, allowing faster verification and quicker access to healthcare facilities.
