KATHMANDU, July 24: Jayanti Devi Rai, chairperson of the Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee, has said the country is facing a deepening crisis and that people's rights are gradually being eroded.
Speaking at an interaction on the role of leftist parties in the current political situation, organized to mark the 48th Memorial Day of Pushpalal Shrestha, Rai said growing public dissatisfaction has prompted people to once again seek a political alternative. "The country is truly in crisis. People's rights are being eroded. We must seriously reflect on this. Today, people are once again looking for an alternative," she said.

Recalling Nepal's political history, Rai said that following the 1951 democratic movement, people placed their trust in the Nepali Congress because of its role in fighting for citizens' rights.
She said public support shifted to the communist parties after the 1990 People's Movement in recognition of their contribution to ending the Panchayat system and safeguarding democratic rights.
Rai added that after the 2006 People's Movement, people once again placed their trust in the communist movement, particularly the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
According to Rai, growing dissatisfaction with both established and emerging political parties has once again led the public to search for an alternative. "People turned to new parties in the hope of a new agenda. But they, too, are unlikely to endure. The traditional parties governed for 35 years, while the new ones have become deeply disappointing within just 100 days," she said.
