KATHMANDU, April 10: The House of Representatives is set to elect a new deputy speaker today, with voting scheduled for 4:00 PM at the Federal Parliament Building in Singha Durbar.
Two candidates are in the race. Saraswati Lama, 59, is contesting from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), while Ruby Kumari Thakur, 26, is representing the Shram Sanskriti Party. Ruby, backed by the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), is widely regarded as the frontrunner.

According to the Parliament Secretariat, the meeting will begin with Prime Minister Balendra Shah tabling a copy of President Ram Chandra Paudel’s address to the joint sitting of both houses. Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal will then present a motion of thanks for the president's address.
The election process will begin immediately afterwards. Lawmaker Gyanendra Bahadur Shahi will table a proposal to elect Saraswati Lama as Deputy Speaker, seconded by Tahir Ali Bhatt, Khusbu Oli, and Bharat Giri.
In response, Aren Rai will present a proposal to elect Ruby Kumari, with support from Ashok Kumar Chaudhary and Ambika Devi Sangraula.
Following deliberations on both proposals, the House will move to a division vote to decide the new Deputy Speaker.
