DAMAULI, March 9: Dr Swarnim Wagle, a name synonymous with economic expertise and policy acumen in Nepal, has once again won the trust of voters. The economist and public policy expert secured his second victory from Tanahu-1 in the recent House of Representatives election, earning 38,040 votes—up from 34,911 in the by-election three years ago.
Born in a small village in Gorkha district, Wagle showed an early passion for learning. His academic journey took him abroad, culminating in a PhD in economics, and set the stage for a career that would bridge research, development, and policy.
Neither balancing nor bandwagoning
After university, Wagle gained international recognition for his work in development economics, public policy, and economic reform. He held significant positions in various international institutions, including the United Nations, focusing on development, poverty alleviation, and economic policy.
Returning to Nepal, he continued his work in national development as Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, contributing to the country’s long-term development plans, economic reform strategies, and governance frameworks.
Realizing that effective policy often requires political leadership for implementation, Wagle made the shift from technical expertise to active politics by joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Political observers have noted his journey as a transition from “technical leadership to political leadership.”
As a parliamentarian from Tanahu-1, Wagle has pledged to prioritize development, good governance, employment, and economic reform. During his campaign, he highlighted the need for fresh ideas and result-oriented politics to bring meaningful change to Nepal.
Today, Dr Wagle is recognized as a rare example of “leadership with policy competence” in Nepali politics. With his experience and expertise, he is expected to make a significant impact in Parliament, steering discussions and policies that could shape Nepal’s economic and developmental trajectory for years to come.
