KATHMANDU, July 2: The Ministry of Urban Development has announced that the government will construct 200 suspension bridges across the country in the upcoming Fiscal Year (FY) 2025/26. The plan was unveiled during a press briefing on Wednesday, where officials outlined key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and urban development.

According to the ministry, in addition to new suspension bridges, the government will also repair 100 existing ones and construct 40 new motorable bridges, along with maintenance work on 30 others.

The ministry also aims to build 100 kilometers of new roads and blacktop 300 kilometers of existing roads. Additionally, 60 local administrative buildings will be constructed across various provinces.

In Kathmandu Valley, 10 kilometers of road corridors along rivers and streams will be upgraded, and 26 locations will see the development of public parks and land conservation projects. Physical development plans have been approved for four areas — Jitpur Fedi, Dukuchhap, Ishan Naya Shahar, and Tathavi Chalabu — as part of an integrated land development initiative. The ministry is also prioritizing the prevention of illegal encroachment and the removal of unauthorized structures on public land.

To promote sustainable urbanization, the government will launch awareness campaigns and initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and the conservation of forests and ponds. The second phase of construction of an international-standard cricket stadium at Kirtipur will also commence.

Under the approved master plan for Singha Durbar, construction of new buildings for the Ministry of Urban Development and the Ministry of Youth and Sports will begin. Residences for high-level officials, including the Speaker of the House and the Chief Justice, are also set to be built.

Plans are also underway to develop an international exhibition and amusement park at Bhrikutimandap. The government will rehabilitate flood-damaged structures along the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manohara, and Nakkhu rivers, and will restore historic temples, rest houses (patis), and religious structures affected by time and disaster.

The ministry further shared that draft legislation is in progress on several fronts, including bills on solid waste management, urban development, the Urban Development Fund, the Bagmati Civilization Project, and settlement development.
