KATHMANDU, May 12: The Tokha Municipality in Kathmandu district has taken action against 46 businesses during a market monitoring campaign to protect consumer rights and improve market management.
According to the municipality, surprise inspections were carried out across 11 wards over several days starting May 8.
The monitoring team comprised representatives from the Municipality, the Metropolitan Police Force, the Central Veterinary Disease Investigation Laboratory, the Veterinary Standards and Drug Regulatory Laboratory, the Livestock Service Office, the Tokha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Consumer Rights Protection Forum.

Chief Administrative Officer Kamal Bhattarai informed that many businesses were operating without proper registration or renewed permits.
During the inspections, authorities found several violations, including the absence of price lists in goods, the sale of expired products, poor hygiene conditions in meat shops and failure to meet minimum operating standards.
The Municipality mentioned that 39 businesses, including fish and meat shops, dairy stores, veterinary medicine shops, handicraft businesses and grocery stores, were issued warnings.
During the market monitoring conducted in accordance with the Tokha Municipality Market Monitoring Directives, six businesses were fined between Rs 1,000 and Rs 50,000, while one shop was shut down.
