KATHMANDU, July 21: The government has launched a new lottery scheme to encourage consumers to collect official bills, offering daily cash prizes and bumper rewards of up to Rs 1 million.

Under the scheme, one lucky consumer will win Rs 133,334 every day, while two consumers every month will each receive a Rs 1 million bumper prize through fortnightly draws.

The scheme is open to citizens who purchase goods or services worth more than Rs 100 and obtain an official bill after paying either online or in cash. The transaction must be made with businesses registered under Value Added Tax (VAT) or holding a Permanent Account Number (PAN).

The government has urged consumers to always collect the original bill when shopping or paying at hotels, restaurants and other businesses, as the bill number itself will serve as the lottery ticket.

The bumper draws will be held twice a month—on the 16th and the last day of the Nepali month—with the initiative aimed at promoting bill collection, discouraging tax evasion and improving tax compliance.
