KATHMANDU, Jan 23: Resham Lal Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, has filed a petition at the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the decision of the Election Commission (EC) to cancel his candidacy.
Chaudhary had filed his nomination for the House of Representatives (HoR) election from Kailali constituency No. 1. On January 22, the Office of the Election Officer decided to reject his candidacy. Seeking to stay that decision and reinstate his nomination, Chaudhary registered a writ petition at the Supreme Court on Friday (January 23).
EC rejects Resham Chaudhary’s candidacy
The election officer’s office stated that Chaudhary’s nomination could not be upheld, citing legal grounds for its cancellation.
Chaudhary had earlier been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court in connection with the violent incident in Tikapur. Based on this verdict, the election officer’s office concluded that he was ineligible under the House of Representatives Election Act.
A hearing on Chaudhary’s petition has been scheduled at the Supreme Court for Sunday (January 25).
