KATHMANDU, May 9: As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, residents on the Indian side near the Line of Control (LoC) are abandoning their homes to escape heavy shelling and seek safety.

These conflict-ridden days have forced residents near the LoC to endure familiar hardships—suffering casualties, losing property and livestock, and coping with curfews and the shutdown of schools, hospitals and markets.

India has accused Pakistan of repeatedly violating the ceasefire along the border after the deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam. During this time, Pakistan reportedly targeted several locations along the 740-kilometer-long Line of Control (LoC).

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs reported that Pakistani shelling along the LoC killed 16 people and injured 59 others following an Indian airstrike on Pakistan on the morning of Wednesday, May 7.

Indian media reported that the casualties included women, children, and an Indian Army soldier, Lance Naik.

Residents in several districts of Punjab panicked after they discovered debris from missiles and drones.

India said it intercepted multiple drone and missile attacks launched from Pakistan during the night of May 7 and 8. On May 8 (Thursday), India claimed it destroyed an air defense system in Lahore. Pakistan has not confirmed the incident.
