KATHMANDU, Jan 24: UNICEF and the Government of Finland on Friday launched Jhalko: Glimpses of West Rukum, a child-led photography exhibition showcasing how education helps children recover and thrive after disasters.
The exhibition features photographs by students of Shree Bheri Dobhan Secondary School in West Rukum, one of 746 schools damaged in the 2023 earthquake. Supported by UNICEF and Finland, the children documented their daily lives, learning spaces, and the moments that matter most, highlighting their resilience and creativity, according to a UNICEF press statement.

“Education provides children safety, structure, and hope after crises,” said Finnish Ambassador Petri Puhakka. UNICEF Representative Alice Akunga added, “Initiatives like Jhalko show why learning continuity is key to recovery and resilience.”
Since the 2023 earthquake, UNICEF and Finland have built 56 semi-permanent learning centres and are constructing 90 more to ensure children can return to school while permanent buildings are rebuilt.
Open from January 24–25 at Patan Durbar Square for the International Day of Education, the exhibition calls for continued investment in education during emergencies so every child can keep learning and build a better future, the press release said.
