KATHMANDU, Nov 1: The CPN (Unified Socialist) appears poised for an official split following the party leadership’s decision to unite with the CPN (Maoist Centre).
While the faction led by party chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal supports the merger, a group led by senior leader Jhalanath Khanal has begun holding separate discussions in Sukedhara, aiming to strengthen the existing party structure rather than merge.

The Khanal-led faction, which includes leaders Ghanendra Basnet, Ghanshyam Bhusal, Bijay Poudel, Ram Kumari Jhankri and Jeevan Ram Shrestha, is advocating for party reorganisation and restructuring.
Politburo member Dharma Niraula said, “We will reorganise this party and move forward. We will run a campaign to restructure all communist parties and build cooperation among them. Now, we are parting ways with Madhav ji.”
Niraula further suggested that Khanal should now serve as the party’s guardian and advisor, allowing General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal to assume leadership. “General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal should now lead. Respected leader Jhalanath Khanal should act as a protector, and Bhusal should be the coordinator,” he stated.
The party’s central committee had earlier decided to merge with the Maoist Centre despite opposition from certain leaders. However, internal differences have now resulted in the formation of a separate faction, which plans to reorganise the party, launch a campaign to restructure all communist parties, and mobilise cadres nationwide within a week to publicly present its vision.
