KATHMANDU, May 22: Traffic police penalized 1,922 drivers in a series of inspection campaigns carried out across various locations in the Kathmandu Valley over the past 24 hours, underscoring stepped-up enforcement of road safety rules.
A total of Rs 1.97 million was collected in fines during the drive.
According to Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office (KVTPO) Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police Navaraj Adhikari, action was taken against 118 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), 198 for ride-sharing violations, 126 for red-light violations, 131 for speeding, 73 for lane violations, 90 for driving on sidewalks, 95 for unnecessary honking in prohibited areas, 105 for one-way violations, and 986 under other categories.

The traffic police have urged the public to report drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs by contacting the nearest police office, the Traffic Control Room hotline (103), or police hotline (100).
Meanwhile, five drivers have been detained in the Kathmandu Valley for driving under the influence of drugs.
They were arrested during a drug influence (DUI/drug test) check carried out in Thali, Kathmandu, as part of a special campaign aimed at reducing rising road accidents and ensuring safer public transportation.
According to the KVTPO, a joint team comprising the Nepal Police Hospital technical team, the Narcotics Control Bureau, and the Traffic Police Division Thali conducted medical and preliminary tests on drivers with technical support.
Five drivers were found to have consumed drugs and were taken into custody.
Among those detained were two bus drivers, one mini-truck driver, one light vehicle driver, and one van driver.
Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Naresh Raj Subedi said the drivers were taken into custody after medical tests confirmed drug use during the joint inspection.
