MUSTANG, June 2: A total of 58 tourists have died due to altitude sickness in Mustang district over the past five years, according to records of the District Police Office, Mustang.
More than 65 percent of the deceased were Indian tourists.

Police data shows that from fiscal year 2021/22 to mid-May 2025/26, 16 Nepali and 42 foreign tourists lost their lives due to altitude sickness in the Himalayan district.
According to Police Inspector Santosh Basyal, six tourists died in 2021/22, 12 in 2022/23, 14 in 2023/24, 13 in 2024/25, and 13 up to mid-May 2025/26, bringing the total to 58.
Authorities say altitude sickness occurs when oxygen levels drop during ascent, particularly affecting travelers moving to higher elevations.
