61 percent of Kathmandu-based cooperatives not following good governance practice

Only 726 of over 1,500 registered cooperatives in the Capital have been found abiding with the good governance practices as they are in regular contact and submitting their annual reports regularly.

KATHMANDU, May 30: Only 726 of over 1,500 registered cooperatives in the Capital have been found abiding with the good governance practices as they are in regular contact and submitting their annual reports regularly.



According to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, there are a total of 1,186 cooperatives operating in the metropolis area. Dhruv Kumar Kafle, head of the Department of Metropolitan Cooperatives, informed that they are in process of taking action as per the law against the cooperatives, which are not in contact.

Kafle said that the ward-based women's network has been given responsibility by the department for regulation. "By sending a letter to the women's network, the responsibility has been given to fulfill the role of cooperation and coordination to maintain the principles of cooperatives, business promotion and good governance," he said.
