KATHMANDU, July 23: Five youths were arrested on Thursday after staging a protest against Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel during the 67th anniversary celebration of Tribhuvan University (TU).
The protesters chanted "Down with Nepo Baby!", directing the slogan at the minister as he arrived at the university's anniversary programme. Police intervened and detained five of the protesters.
Curious concerns
The demonstrators demanded the implementation of a merit-based system in universities, the abolition of the current arrangement under which the prime minister serves as chancellor and the education minister as pro-chancellor, and an end to political interference in higher education institutions.
They argued that universities should operate independently and that appointments should be based on merit rather than political influence.
