KATHMANDU, May 25: The upcoming budget session is being prepared to convene in the main hall of the under-construction new Parliament building inside the Singha Durbar complex.
The Department of Urban Development and Building Construction is working round the clock to make the main hall of the new Parliament building ready for the budget session. Currently, parliamentary meetings are being held in an alternative hall due to incomplete construction work.
Will new parliament building be ready before March 5?
According to officials, the main hall is being prepared to accommodate joint sittings of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, with a capacity of over 350 members, while the existing temporary hall can host around 300 people.
Although there were repeated plans to shift parliamentary sessions to the new building after the 2022 elections, delays in construction have prevented its use. The project, initiated six years ago with its foundation laid in 2019, has reached its final stage but is still not fully completed.
Officials cite repeated design changes, technical challenges, and weak contractor management as key reasons for delays. The project has already cost more than Rs 5 billion so far.
