KATHMANDU, May 19: The government has decided to provide a one-time resettlement grant of Rs 25,000 to squatters displaced from settlements in the Kathmandu Valley.
According to Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel, the decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar. The assistance will be provided to affected families after verification of their details.
In addition to the lump-sum support, the government has approved a temporary housing assistance scheme for displaced families opting for self-managed accommodation. Under the scheme, families with up to five members will receive Rs 15,000 per month for three months, while larger families will receive an additional Rs 2,000 per extra member per month, according to Minister Pokharel, who is also the government’s spokesperson.

The Cabinet also decided to place elderly, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable individuals who are unable to arrange their own accommodation in designated holding centers. It further directed local authorities to ensure continuity of education for children and access to essential health services for affected populations.
In a separate decision, the Cabinet approved the Delegation Regulations, 2083 BS and the Army Service (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2083 BS. It also granted approval to table a bill in the Federal Parliament to amend the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 BS.
The government additionally approved the adjustment and reassignment of gazetted special-class secretaries in line with the Government of Nepal (Work Division) Regulations, 2083.
The meeting further approved foreign grants, including 6.116 million Swiss francs from the Government of Switzerland for the Municipal Revenue Enhancement Project and 79.36 million RMB from the Government of China for the maintenance and improvement of the Araniko Highway.
