Japan provides Rs 2.6 billion grant to rehabilitate flood-damaged BP Highway

The Sindhuli Road was severely damaged by floods triggered by continuous heavy rains in September 2024. Over 10 km of the road was washed away, severely affecting the local economy, people’s livelihoods and Nepal’s broader economy including trade and transportation.

KATHMANDU, Oct 30: The Government of Japan has decided to provide grant assistance of 2.8 billion yen (equivalent to Nepali Rs 2.6 billion) for the “Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Affected by Floods.”



The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Minister for Finance Rameshore Prasad Khanal and Minister for Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. Japanese Ambassador to Nepal Maeda Toru and Secretary of the Ministry of Finance Ghanshyam Upadhyaya signed the Exchange of Notes for the grant, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of Japan in Nepal on Thursday.

The 160-km-long Sindhuli Road, known as BP Highway, connects the mid and eastern Terai with the capital city, Kathmandu. Its construction was supported by Japanese grant assistance of 25.8 billion yen between 1995 and 2015, contributing significantly to Nepal’s economic growth, the press release stated.


However, the road was severely damaged by floods triggered by continuous heavy rains in September 2024. Over 10 km of the road was washed away, severely affecting the local economy, people’s livelihoods and Nepal’s broader economy including trade and transportation.


Through this grant assistance, the Government of Japan aims to support the rehabilitation and recovery of the road. The Sindhuli Road will continue to serve as a vital route symbolizing the long-standing friendship between Japan and Nepal, the press release stated further.
