KATHMANDU, May 27: The Consulate-General of Nepal in Hong Kong organised “Nepal: Peaks and Peace 2026” to mark the 2570th Buddha Jayanti and the 73rd International Sagarmatha Day, promoting Nepal as the birthplace of Lord Buddha and home to Sagarmatha (Mt Everest).
According to a press release issued by the Consulate-General, the event highlighted Nepal’s spiritual and natural heritage while encouraging deeper engagement in tourism and hospitality.
Speaking at the programme, Acting Consul-General Satish Gurung said Nepal uniquely represents both “ultimate physical endurance and profound spiritual enlightenment.” He also praised Hong Kong’s mountaineering community for its longstanding ties with Nepal and highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure, services, and regional connectivity in Lumbini.
Hong Kong, the Pearl of the Orient, will shine again
New Zealand Consul-General Peter Lund spoke about the historic relationship between Nepal, Sagarmatha, and New Zealand, recalling the contribution of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation and its close bond with the Sherpa community.
The event began with a mangal paath pooja led by gurus from the Namo Buddha Buddhist Centre Hong Kong, followed by a lamp-lighting ceremony attended by Acting Consul-General Gurung and Wei Wenxiu, Director-General (Consular) of the Office of the Commissioner of China’s Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR.
Guests also watched a documentary on Lumbini focusing on its significance as the birthplace of Buddha and its archaeological importance.
The reception was attended by members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, diplomats, representatives from the travel and hospitality sector, chamber officials, and members of the Nepali community.
The Consulate also hosted a dinner featuring Nepali cuisine, including momo and chhoila, and partnered with Tagera Traders to showcase wines from Nepal’s Manang Valley.
