KATHMANDU, May 23: Severe heat has been anticipated in six districts of western Nepal. Accordingly, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has issued an alert notice urging all concerned to adopt precautionary measures.
From today through Monday, temperature in certain regions of the West Terai, especially in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Province, may surpass 40 degrees Celsius. The districts of Dang, Banke, Bardiya, Doti, Kailali, and Kanchanpur are under heightened alert, with additional districts such as Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, and others also advised to keep a close watch on the situation.
Heat wave taking toll in western Tarai districts
The NDRRMA cautions that the extreme heat and hot air waves could result in moderate to severe effects on human health, manifesting symptoms such as fatigue, dehydration, headache, and dizziness. Consequently, all disaster management agencies are urged to prepare for necessary counteractions.
Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has reported observing a swift rise in temperatures since early May. To alleviate the consequences of the heat wave, the authority suggests that individuals remain indoors during peak sunlight hours, don protective clothing, and maintain hydration.
Recommendation has also been made to consume light and fresh food while avoiding junk food. Outdoor activities should be restricted to early morning or late afternoon, and children and the elderly should be shielded from direct sunlight to avert heat-related illnesses.
