KATHMANDU, May 26 : A tense situation erupted in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) MP Jagdish Kharel referred to opposition protests as “tamasha” (drama), triggering strong objections from opposition lawmakers.

According to the press report, the incident occurred during ongoing obstruction by opposition parties demanding the presence and response of Prime Minister Balen Shah in Parliament. In response to the protests, MP Khairel urged the opposition not to “stage drama” in the House.

The situation escalated, forcing Speaker DP Aryal to adjourn the meeting for 15 minutes.

Opposition lawmakers had been standing and obstructing proceedings, insisting that Prime Minister Shah appear in the House and respond to current political issues. The Speaker repeatedly requested lawmakers to take their seats, assuring them that the Prime Minister would appear soon.

Despite repeated requests, the opposition continued their protest, leading the Speaker to proceed with the session amid noise and disruption.

As the Speaker moved ahead with the agenda, including consideration of the Tourism Bill, MP Khairel took the floor.

He said Parliament is a law-making institution and criticized the disruption during an important legislative discussion. “We are in the process of passing tourism legislation that has not been enacted for 48 years. It is not appropriate to create drama in Parliament during such important discussions,” he said, according to the press report.

His remarks further angered opposition MPs, intensifying protests in the House.

The standoff between opposition demands for the Prime Minister’s presence and ruling party remarks led to an increasingly confrontational atmosphere in Parliament. The Speaker also expressed dissatisfaction, saying he was unwilling to proceed with legislative business amid continuous obstruction.
