KATHMANDU, June 1: Opposition parties have collectively concluded that Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s remarks on border issues made in Parliament should be removed from official parliamentary records.

The meeting, convened by Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe, was attended by whips from CPN-UML, the Nepali Communist Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Shram Sanskriti Party.

Speaking after the meeting, RPP Chief Whip Khusbu Oli said the Prime Minister should clarify his statement in Parliament. She added that there is a “clear difference” between the Prime Minister’s remarks and the position later presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which referred to “cross-border occupation.”

Oli said the Prime Minister should come to Parliament and clearly explain his position to the public.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Shah had said that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory in several areas, a remark that sparked controversy. Opposition parties have since demanded that the statement be expunged from the parliamentary record.

The House of Representatives is scheduled to meet later this afternoon.
