Sri Lanka embassy marks Int’l Tea Day 2026, celebrating 159 Years of Ceylon Tea Excellence

The event brought together senior representatives of the Government of Nepal, tea industry stakeholders, and distinguished guests to celebrate the longstanding heritage and global reputation of Ceylon Tea.

KATHMANDU, May 29: The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu commemorated International Tea Day 2026 at a special function held at the Ambassador’s Official Residence under the theme “159 Years of Excellence in Ceylon Tea.” The event brought together senior representatives of the Government of Nepal, tea industry stakeholders, and distinguished guests to celebrate the longstanding heritage and global reputation of Ceylon Tea.



In her opening address at the event, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Nepal, Ruwanthi Delpitiya, highlighted the enduring legacy of Ceylon Tea, noting 159 years of recognized excellence and global appeal. Referring to the International Tea Day 2026 theme, “Sustaining Tea, Supporting Communities,” she reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainable practices, ethical production, and the well-being of tea-growing communities.

Ambassador Delpitiya further emphasized that Ceylon Tea remains one of Sri Lanka’s most prominent global brands, reflecting the nation’s traditions of quality, authenticity, and excellence. She also underscored tea’s role as a symbol of hospitality, cultural connection, and friendship between Sri Lanka and Nepal.


The programme also featured a presentation on the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Intergovernmental Group themes for International Tea Day 2026, along with the screening of official campaign videos. A detailed presentation on Ceylon Tea was delivered by Commercial Officer Bibek Wosti of the Embassy, highlighting Sri Lanka’s tea heritage, quality standards, and export significance.


A key highlight of the event was a curated exhibition and tasting of teas representing Sri Lanka’s seven tea-growing regions, offering guests an opportunity to experience the distinct flavors and characteristics of regional Ceylon Tea. The display also included a variety of tea grades as well as herbal and specialty teas.


Guests were also offered an authentic Sri Lankan culinary experience, complemented by Ceylon Tea and tea-based mocktails. The programme further featured a showcase of Ceylon Tea products presented by Dilmah.


An interactive tea tasting and networking session that followed provided guests an opportunity to engage with representatives from the tea and business sectors while exploring the diversity of Ceylon Tea.
