KATHMANDU, July 24: Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle has pledged to end political interference in government appointments, transfers, and promotions, saying officials will be selected solely on merit and performance rather than political connections.
Addressing a gathering of tax officers from across the country at the Inland Revenue Department on Thursday, Wagle said Prime Minister Balendra Shah had made it clear that the government values results over individuals.
According to Wagle, the prime minister instructed him to follow due process and deliver measurable outcomes. “The prime minister's concern is not who gets appointed or retained. What matters is producing results,” he said.

Wagle said the long-standing practice of seeking backing from political parties, factions, or power brokers for appointments and transfers has weakened the civil service. He said the government is committed to building a system where responsibilities are assigned only on the basis of competence, capability, and performance.
“Political pressure will not be accepted under any circumstances. Our priority is results, not individuals,” he said, adding that no decision would be influenced by family ties, personal relationships, or recommendations from political leaders.
The finance minister also defended the appointments made under his leadership, saying they were based on fair evaluation and merit. Referring to the appointment of the Nepal Rastra Bank's deputy governor, he said many people tried to influence the process through lobbying, but the most qualified candidate was ultimately selected.
Wagle said he would personally visit Inland Revenue Offices, Customs Offices, and other revenue agencies across the country to assess their performance. He added that he was ready to hear employees' concerns, challenges, and suggestions directly.
“Employees have nothing to fear. If you have problems or suggestions, you can present them directly to the ministry,” he said.
He also urged employees to report any irregularities or weaknesses in revenue administration with evidence. According to Wagle, the government's focus is on strengthening systems, promoting good governance, and building institutional capacity rather than relying on individual decisions.
His remarks come as the government seeks to reduce political interference in administrative appointments and decision-making.
