KATHMANDU, April 10: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Member of Parliament Khusbu Oli has criticised the government following a sharp increase in petroleum product prices by the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC).
Taking to the social media platform X, she questioned why consumers were not feeling the impact of tax reductions despite the government announcing up to a 50 percent cut in customs duty and infrastructure development tax.
Govt decides to reduce tax on petroleum products
“Even though the government has provided up to a 50 percent discount on customs duty and infrastructure development tax, the public has not felt any direct benefit. While prices continue to rise, the corporation still talks about losses worth billions—is this a management failure or a policy failure?” she wrote.
She further argued that the lack of price reduction despite tax cuts reflects government inefficiency. “The question is simple: if taxes have been reduced, why have market prices not come down? Why is the government unable to ensure price control in a way that provides relief to the public?” she added.
She stressed that on issues directly linked to people’s lives, the government’s role should go beyond announcements and ensure effective implementation.
The NOC increased fuel prices effective from Thursday midnight, saying the hike was necessary despite the tax cuts, citing continued financial losses.
