KATHMANDU, July 24: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has shut down more than 223,000 online betting websites and applications as part of the government's efforts to curb illegal financial activities.
The move follows a government reform agenda unveiled on March 27, which directed the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to ensure that such platforms are blocked within 24 hours.

Despite the crackdown, many betting platforms have resurfaced under new names, prompting the authority to intensify its efforts. Concerns over the widespread use of betting apps grew during the FIFA World Cup, leading to stricter monitoring.
To address the issue, the NTA has formed a dedicated task force and coordinated with internet service providers (ISPs) to block the URLs of illegal betting platforms.
Assistant Director Om Prakash Mahato said identifying and shutting down the websites remains challenging, as new platforms continue to emerge.
The NTA uses a Threat Intelligence Tool to track and block illegal websites more efficiently and has allocated additional resources to strengthen its enforcement efforts. It has also urged the public to report illegal betting websites through a designated online portal for prompt action.
