KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called General Secretaries duo Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma for discussions after leaders supporting a special general convention booked a hall at Bhrikutimandap on Wednesday.
Supporters aligned with Thapa and Sharma booked the venue for January 11-12, citing preparations for a special general convention. Following the move—made without the consent of party president Deuba and acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka—Deuba has become more active in addressing the issue.
According to party leader Ramesh Lekhak, Deuba has invited both general secretaries for talks at his residence in Maharajgunj at 5 PM on Thursday.
Pressure mounts within NC to hold general convention soon
Thapa and Sharma have been pushing to convene a special general convention to implement Clause 17(2) of the party statute. Earlier, 54 percent of the party’s general convention delegates had submitted signatures to the central office demanding a special general convention.
On October 15, a proposal backed by signatures of 54 percent of the delegates was registered at the party’s central office in Sanepa, seeking to convene the special convention. As per the Nepali Congress statute, a special general convention must be held within three months of such a proposal being registered.
Earlier, after consultations with party leaders, President Deuba and Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka had endorsed a schedule for the party’s 15th general convention through a central committee meeting on December 1.
However, with the likelihood of holding the regular general convention appearing weak, preparations for a special general convention have now gained momentum.
