KATHMANDU, Oct 27: Tension flared at KIST Medical Hospital in Imadol, Lalitpur, on Sunday after police used tear gas and baton charge to disperse protesters demanding justice over the death of a pregnant woman during treatment.
The deceased, identified as Mina Rai, died on October 24 under what her family has described as “mysterious circumstances.” Relatives and supporters have accused the hospital of medical negligence, claiming her death resulted from improper treatment.

The situation turned tense after Rai’s relatives and well-wishers gathered outside the hospital this morning, chanting slogans and demanding action against those responsible. As the crowd swelled, some protesters reportedly began pelting stones at the hospital building.
In response, police deployed at the scene used batons and fired tear gas shells to control the situation. According to witnesses, several people, including protesters and police personnel, sustained minor injuries during the clash.
Hospital authorities said they called the police for security after the protest turned violent. Meanwhile, Rai’s family has demanded an impartial investigation into her death and action against those found guilty of negligence.
Authorities have tightened security around the hospital premises to prevent further unrest.
