Flood inundates dozens of places in Jhapa

JHAPA, July 21: Incessant rainfall since Tuesday night has inundated dozen of areas in Jhapa district. Water level in rivers has increased significantly and threatening the nearby settlements.

JHAPA, July 21: Incessant rainfall since Tuesday night has inundated dozen of areas in Jhapa district. Water level in rivers has increased significantly and threatening the nearby settlements.



According to District Police Office (DPO), Jhapa, floods in Kamala River has washed away house belonging to Hema Acharaya, Kumari Rasaili among other locals in Dharampur VDC-1.



Various settlements of Prithvinagar-8, including Kanjan and Kalyan, and Bhaisibadi of Bhadrapur-1 are at high risks from floods, police informed.



“At least 22 VDCs and 7 municipalities of the district are at high risk,” said Lok Raj Dhakal, president of Jhapa chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society.



Likewise, floods have inundated dozens of houses and shops in Birtamod. The district chapter of Red Cross informed that flood waters inundated settlements of Ratuwa, Taiting, Ninda, Mechi, Biring, Kamal, Ghagra among others.



Armed Police Force (APF), Nepal Police and Red Cross have been deployed in the affected areas to carry out rescue operations.



Fences erected in Bahundangi-8 to prevent elephants from entering human settlements have also been destroyed by floods in Mechi River.



According to Dhakal, land erosions due to floods have displaced hundreds of families in the district so far. Thousand of bighas of arable land in Damak, Shivashatakshi, Kankai and Shaniarjun, as well as Mechinagar and Bhadrapur municipalities have been affected by floods.
