KATHMANDU, July 26: Traffic police have taken action against 1,371 motorcyclists as part of a special campaign targeting illegally modified motorcycles that produce excessive noise in the Kathmandu Valley.
According to Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, the campaign focuses on riders who modify motorcycle silencers and other components to create loud noise, perform stunts, and disturb public peace on roads late into the night.

Subedi said authorities intensified surveillance after receiving long-standing complaints from local residents, pedestrians and motorists. Riders found performing stunts or operating excessively noisy motorcycles are being fined and prosecuted under existing laws.
He said modified motorcycles have become a particular nuisance, frightening young children, disturbing neighborhoods at night and posing risks to road safety. Traffic police said some riders intentionally rev their motorcycles beside women riding scooters, startling them and, in some cases, causing accidents.
The Traffic Police Office stressed that public roads are shared spaces and cannot be used for personal entertainment or displays that compromise the safety, peace and freedom of others. It urged motorists to drive responsibly and maintain discipline, as roads are used simultaneously by pedestrians and different types of vehicles.
Subedi also urged riders to obey traffic rules, avoid unnecessary vehicle modifications, refrain from using devices that create excessive noise and show respect to fellow motorists and pedestrians.
Traffic police said monitoring and enforcement against such activities will be further intensified in the coming days. They warned that loud exhausts, stunt riding and any activity that threatens public peace or road safety will not be tolerated, and offenders will face legal action.
